DocsBuild / MCP tool reference

MCP tool reference

The long half of the developer quickstart: what each tool takes, what it sends back, and a real response for each.

The nine tools

Six work over the indexed business directory: three read it and can never run anything; do is the only one that could act on a business’s behalf, and it refuses almost every call by construction; request_status only reads the outcome of a request do accepted; respond_to_quote sends the user’s accept or decline of the owner’s quote, only after the user said yes in their own chat (user_confirmed), and takes no payment. See Verification and the trust gate for the mechanism and the worked example below for the exact refusal.

The other three, inspect_site, do_action, read_page, work on ANY website, not only an indexed business: an agent can crawl a site’s action map, read one of its pages, or fill (never submit, by construction) one of its forms, whether or not that site has ever been scanned by Frontlatch.

What each tool answers, what it needs, and whether it can run anything
ToolAnswersRequired argumentsRuns anything?
find_businessSearch the index by free text, suburb and/or category. All optional; none returns a bounded browse list. Frontlatch covers Australian businesses today: a place outside Australia returns no results and a coverageNote. A named city or state scopes the search to that place, so a query for one city is never answered with the businesses of another; a place with no indexed rows returns empty with a rankingNote. A town outside the covered cities, such as Townsville or Geelong, is searched by distance within its state, nearest first, widening from 25 to 50, 100 and 200 km, and a note says how far it had to widen; the gazetteer lists about 190 towns, so a town it does not list is not matched, and a business whose location cannot be placed is left out rather than guessed. Scanned businesses rank first, then seeded ones no scan has read yet (status: "queued", grade: null), then unreachable sites.NoneNo
list_actionsEvery action the crawler detected on one business’s site, verbatim from the index.businessNo
describe_actionThe detected action(s) of one kind, booking, quote, contact, callback, phone, widget, unclassified, on one business.business, kindNo
doAttempts a named action on a business. Refused, with the business’s own website and phone in the reply, unless the business is claimed and has switched that action on for email-confirm routing.business, actionOnly a pending, logged attempt, never an executed one
request_statusThe outcome of a request do accepted, by the requestId it returned: pending, accepted, declined, quoted or expired. A quoted answer carries quote: amount in dollars, currency (AUD), slot and note. A quote is an offer, not a booking, and nothing is paid. Accepted means the owner said yes; nothing else does. No customer details come back.requestIdNo
inspect_siteCrawls ANY website (not just an indexed business) and returns its detected actions, forms, search, login, purchase, then plain navigation links, deduplicated. Cached per origin for 24 hours.urlNo
do_actionRuns one action from inspect_site’s map on that same origin. navigate/search read the target page; a form is filled but, by default, never submitted.origin, actionIdA read for navigate/search; a fill-and-validate, never a submit, for a form, even with confirm: true
read_pageFetches ANY page and returns its title, readable text as markdown, and its links, the cheap alternative to a browser screenshot.urlNo

From the tools/list response above, 17 Sep 2026. Nothing is required; calling it with no arguments returns a bounded browse list. When the suburb you ask for has no exact match, results are ordered exact, then adjacent suburbs, then the same part of the city, then the rest, with unreachable sites last within each step, and interpretation.rankingNote says which fallback applied (it is null on an exact match). A place the index does not cover, such as London, returns no results and a location.note saying Frontlatch covers Australian businesses today. From the same response. business is required, a name or domain, as find_business returns it.

Jobs come first (forms, phone, booking, sign-up), then at most ten distinct plain links with their real addresses; navigationOmitted counts the links left out, so a long menu is not mistaken for the whole list.

When no complete action is mapped for a business, the result also carries a fallback contact action, flagged fallback: true, built from what the page exposes: a phone number, an email if the page shows one, and the page that holds the contact form or details. For an unclaimed business it returns those details and a prefilled message for you or the user to send; Frontlatch never emails a business. For a claimed one, call do with action: "contact" and the owner’s own email-confirm flow applies. counts.mappable ignores fallbacks and counts.actionable includes them.

describe_action

From the same response. business and kind are both required; kind is a closed enum of the seven action kinds the crawler classifies into.

inspect_site

}
From the same response, 27 Sep 2026. url is required and can be any website, openWorldHint: true is the honest flag for a tool whose target is not a closed index.

do_action

  },
  "annotations": {
    "readOnlyHint": false,
    "destructiveHint": true,
    "idempotentHint": false,
    "openWorldHint": true
  }
}
origin and actionId are required, actionId must be one inspect_site already returned for that origin. confirm defaults to false; inputs is accepted but ignored by every action kind this tool runs today.

do

  },
  "annotations": {
    "readOnlyHint": false,
    "destructiveHint": true,
    "idempotentHint": false,
    "openWorldHint": true
  }
}
business and action are required. For a job request, params.request carries customerName, contact, jobDescription and suburb (optionally postcode and preferredTime); an invalid one is refused with a message per field and is never logged or emailed. idempotency_key is optional: send the same value on a retry and the reply carries the original requestId instead of a second job card. Nothing this tool is given is executed: the owner decides. destructiveHint and openWorldHint both read true: the spec’s own conservative default for a tool whose target is arbitrary, not a promise about what the tool does today.

Live, 3 Oct 2026. Only requestId is required. readOnlyHint: true: it reads a stored outcome and changes nothing.

}
Live, 9 Oct 2026. requestId, decision and user_confirmed are required; without user_confirmed: true nothing is sent. The owner is emailed; no payment is taken or arranged.

read_page

inputSchema + annotations, verbatim

{
  "inputSchema": {
    "type": "object",

  },
  "annotations": {
    "readOnlyHint": true,
    "destructiveHint": false,
    "idempotentHint": true,
    "openWorldHint": true
  }
}
From the same response. Only url is required; maxChars defaults to 8000. Works on any URL, indexed or not.

When nothing readable comes back, the result says why. blocked: true means only that the site’s robots.txt disallows the read. unreachable: true means a bad URL, a DNS failure, a timeout or a non-2xx answer; the two are never both true. emptyReason (repeated in detail) is set whenever text is empty, including a page that rendered and still held no text. Links to image files are left out.

The receipt card (MCP Apps)

resources/list and resources/read serve one view, ui://frontlatch/receipt (mimeType text/html;profile=mcp-app), on /mcp and on /s/<domain>/mcp. do, do_action, request_status (the owner’s answer, such as a quote) and the site signup tool name it in _meta.ui.resourceUri in tools/list. A host that supports MCP Apps renders it in a sandboxed frame; any other client ignores the key and reads the text reply, which is unchanged.

Only a real outcome (a request logged for the owner, an account created or already existing) adds business, action, title, summary, status, request_id and verified_at to structuredContent. A refusal adds none of them and the card draws nothing, so “Verified by Frontlatch” never appears on a refusal. A sign-up made by filling the site’s own form returns reason: "signup-created-unverified" with verified_at null: the card reads “Account reported created”, status pending, with no pill, and nothing is billable. The card’s Track button calls request_status through the host. On /s/<domain>/mcp there is no request_status and no request id, so Track is hidden.

Worked example: find a business, read what it offers, ask it to act

Three calls, chained the way an agent would chain them, all run against production on 17 Sep 2026.

1. find_business

curl -s -X POST https://frontlatch.com/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":3,"method":"tools/call",
       "params":{"name":"find_business","arguments":{"query":"plumber"}}}'

      "suburbHadNoMatch": false
    }
  }
}
Live. The real call returned 7 plumbers; trimmed here to the first so the next two calls follow one business.

1b. find_business, a suburb with no exact match

curl -s -X POST https://frontlatch.com/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \

      },
      "suburbHadNoMatch": true

  }
}
Live, 29 Sep 2026. Asking for a cafe in Manly found none in Manly itself, so the gateway returned 10 from the same part of the city, and suburbHadNoMatch and interpretation.rankingNote say so; trimmed here to the first result.

2. list_actions

curl -s -X POST https://frontlatch.com/mcp \

Live, full response. Three ways in on this business’s own site, none of them agent-callable yet, that flag turns on once a business verifies.

The refusal, and why it is a feature

3. do

curl -s -X POST https://frontlatch.com/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":5,"method":"tools/call",
       "params":{"name":"do","arguments":{"business":"aussieservices.com","action":"booking"}}}'

{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 5,
  "result": {
    "isError": false,
    "structuredContent": {
      "authorised": false,
      "reason": "not-verified",
      "business": "Aussie Home Services",
      "domain": "aussieservices.com",
      "detail": "Aussie Home Services has not verified any action type with Frontlatch, so this gateway will not run \"booking\" on their behalf, no code path here executes a real action on an unverified business. Reach them directly using howToReach below.",
      "howToReach": {
        "website": "https://aussieservices.com/",
        "phone": "tel:1300164206"
      }
    }
  }
}
Live, full response, one clause cut: the real detail string names its internal rule file by number and this site does not print a repo path on a customer page, so that parenthetical is removed and nothing else is, same business, same phone number, same wording either side of the cut.

That refusal is not a bug waiting on a fix. The gateway will not let an agent run an action on a business’s behalf until that business has verified it, that is the rule described on Verification, applied at the one place code could otherwise fire something nobody agreed to.

One path is wired for when a business does verify: claimed and switched on for email-confirm routing, the same call would come back "authorised": true, "reason": "pending-confirmation", a pending attempt logged with a requestId and the owner emailed a job card with the customer’s details and Accept and Decline buttons, still nothing executed until they accept it. Poll request_status with the requestId: pending, accepted, declined, quoted, booked, declined by the customer or expired. When the owner sent a quote, respond_to_quote with requestId, decision (accept or decline) and user_confirmed: true (set only after the user said yes in chat) books it or turns it down and emails the owner; no payment is taken. A second path exists for sign-ups: do with action: "signup", name, email, an optional plan and user_confirmed: true (set only after the user said yes in chat) creates an account when the owner switched agent sign-ups on, and the site emails the user its own set-password link. No password or card number ever passes through the agent. Build against the refusal shown here; it is what every caller gets today.

Worked example: any website. inspect it, then act on it

The same business as above, this time crawled directly, inspect_site never touches the business index, so this would work just as well on a site Frontlatch has never scanned. All three calls run against production on 27 Sep 2026.

1. inspect_site

curl -s -X POST https://frontlatch.com/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":6,"method":"tools/call",
       "params":{"name":"inspect_site","arguments":{"url":"https://aussieservices.com"}}}'

{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 6,
  "result": {
    "isError": false,
    "structuredContent": {
      "ok": true,
      "cached": true,
      "map": {
        "origin": "https://aussieservices.com",
        "scannedAt": "2026-09-27T07:23:55.214Z",
        "pages": 15,
        "actions": [
          { "id": "act_0c2a84d470c3", "kind": "contact", "label": "contact form", "page": "https://aussieservices.com/", "agentUsable": false, "gap": "a CAPTCHA on this page blocks legitimate agents" },
          { "id": "act_7b5d4b3cd569", "kind": "contact", "label": "contact form", "page": "https://aussieservices.com/contact-us", "agentUsable": false, "gap": "1 of 7 field(s) have no label, an agent cannot tell what goes where; a CAPTCHA on this page blocks legitimate agents" },
          { "id": "act_4ee344b3cb2b", "kind": "booking", "label": "booking form", "page": "https://aussieservices.com/electrician-service-areas", "agentUsable": false, "gap": "a CAPTCHA on this page blocks legitimate agents" },
          { "id": "act_1ea743d93445", "kind": "navigate", "label": "Ryde", "page": "https://aussieservices.com/plumber-service-areas", "agentUsable": true, "href": "https://aussieservices.com/plumber-service-areas/plumbers-ryde/" },
          { "id": "act_4e2e829dc794", "kind": "phone", "label": "Phone link", "page": "https://aussieservices.com/", "agentUsable": false }
        ]
      }
    }
  }
}
Live, full response. Both contact forms and the booking form come back agentUsable: false with a gap naming exactly why, a CAPTCHA, an unlabelled field, the same honesty list_actions already carries for the index version of this business; dozens of near-duplicate service-area links collapse to one navigate action per page.

2. do_action, dry run (confirm defaults to false)

curl -s -X POST https://frontlatch.com/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":7,"method":"tools/call",
       "params":{"name":"do_action","arguments":{"origin":"https://aussieservices.com","actionId":"act_7b5d4b3cd569"}}}'

{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 7,
  "result": {
    "isError": false,
    "structuredContent": {
      "status": "dry_run",
      "detail": "No form on https://aussieservices.com/contact-us matched the action \"contact form\".",
      "filled": [],
      "missingRequired": [],
      "formValid": false,
      "outcome": "no-form-matched"
    }
  }
}
Live, full response. A dry run only ever fills and validates a form, never submits it, here the fill never even matched a real form to the label inspect_site found, outcome: "no-form-matched", which is its own honest answer about this particular page, not a bug in this example.

3. do_action, confirm: true

curl -s -X POST https://frontlatch.com/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":8,"method":"tools/call",
       "params":{"name":"do_action","arguments":{"origin":"https://aussieservices.com","actionId":"act_7b5d4b3cd569","confirm":true}}}'

{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 8,
  "result": {
    "isError": false,
    "structuredContent": {
      "status": "blocked",
      "reason": "required-field-refused",
      "detail": "No form on https://aussieservices.com/contact-us matched the action \"contact form\"."
    }
  }
}
Live, same run. confirm: true still does not submit anything, a browser-level guard removes real form submission from every page this tool opens, confirm or not. A filled, valid form on a claimed, action-enabled origin instead reuses do’s pending-confirmation path above; every other origin, and every login/signup/purchase action regardless of confirm, is refused, the rule described on Verification again, applied here too.

Worked example: read one page

The cheap alternative to a browser screenshot, one call, run against production on 27 Sep 2026.

Live, re-captured 10 Oct 2026, maxChars trimmed to 300 for this page and links cut to the first 2 of the real 50 (the cap), the untrimmed response returns every link on the page, deduped and capped at 50. actions is empty because this page is not itself an indexed business’s page; read_page works on any URL either way.

Point an agent at the gateway.
